Introduction on famous wind power equipment manufacturer Part One Vestas --- the leader of wind power equipment manufacturer
Mentioned wind power equipment manufacturers, Vestas is first on the list, which is from Denmark with about 20% market share and firmly occupies the position of the largest wind power equipment manufacturer in the world.
As for Vestas history, it can be dated from year of 1898. This year, blacksmith H.S. Hansen was only 22 years old and he opened his own first workshop in the seaside town, Lem of Denmark, where was full of rich wind resource. In subsequent decades, the small workshop gradually evolved into a private limited company. In 1945, his son, Peter Hansen founded the West Jutland steel technology company with other nine colleagues. Shortly thereafter, they changed company name to Vestas. At the beginning, they produced family kitchen products, like blender. In 1971, Vestas hired an engineer named Bringer Madsen and began to try to manufacture wind turbine. Wind turbine has been designed as whisk shape. Later, it was proved that this shape wind turbine could not produce sustained and valuable power. At the same time, in the other small town of Denmark, two blacksmiths also studied wind turbine. They found Vestas, and cooperated to create three leaves blowers, like nowadays.
In 1979, Vestas sold and installed the first wind turbines. Its rotor was 10 meters long and power generation capacity of 30 kilowatts. Thus, Vestas formally embarked on the production road of wind turbine. In 1985, Vestas has successfully developed the world's first variable pitch wind turbine, which can make blade to slightly adjust angle according to wind conditions at every moment, thereby greatly enhancing the generating capacity. This feature soon became Vestas selling point. However, a year later, Vestas has experienced a major crisis. In 1986, California announced that tax legislation of special incentives for the installation of wind turbines had expired. This hit Vestas market in the United States and lead the group to being declared bankrupt. The crisis made Vestas Group to sell most of its assets. However, at the end of the year, Vestas quickly built Vestas Wind Systems, Inc., which began to focus on wind power equipment manufacturing.
In 1990, Vestas has developed a breakthrough blade, reducing the weight from 3800 kg to 1100 kg. In 1995, Vestas sailed to offshore wind power, and built the first offshore wind farm in the world. In 1998, Vestas listed in Copenhagen Stock Exchange. In 2001, the group was selected as the world's largest offshore wind farm equipment suppliers. At the end of 2004, Vestas Wind Systems united with another wind system manufacturer NEG Micon. The new enterprise was still labeled with Vestas name, and became the world wind industry leader based on 34 percent of the global market share.
According to data shown on Vestas website, by now, Vestas has installed more than 40,000 sets of wind turbines in 65 countries and regions of five continents, that is, one new wind turbine has been installed every three hours. Till to the end of 2009, Vestas global gross installed capacity was over 38,000 MW.
In 1986, Vestas entered Chinese wind energy industry. The first batch of wind turbines installed in Hainan Province and Shandong Province. In Tianjin, Vestas has China's largest wind power manufacturer, producing generators, blades, nacelle, hub and control systems. Till to December 31, 2009, Vestas has installed 2043 sets of wind turbines in China, which can provide generating capacity of 2106.60 MW. Vestas turbines covered 13 provinces in China, from Guangdong in South China to Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Inner Mongolia in North China, along with Xinjiang in West China and Zhejiang, Fujian in East China. Vestas has also set up China offshore wind power business office, responsible for China offshore wind power business development, and entered into China market relying on Tianjin production base, carrying 2 MW and 3 MW offshore wind turbines.
